My hands are literally sweating. I had to pause it just to go to the kitchen and run my wrists under cold water. My palms are still clammy. I feel like I need to lie down on the floor and just feel the solid, unmoving ground beneath me. Jesus Christ.
I just finished *Fall* on Prime Video. Rented it. Lying here on my couch in the dark, which now feels like it's a thousand feet in the air. Bad idea. Terrible idea. Why did I do this to myself? I hate heights. HATE them. And yet, here I am, willingly putting myself through two hours of pure, unadulterated vertigo.
That one shot. You know the one. After they climb the tower, and they're just standing there, and the camera just… backs up. And keeps backing up. And keeps backing up. The drone pulls away and the music swells and you see this tiny, rust-red speck on top of this impossibly thin needle stabbing into the sky. I literally slid down my couch cushions. My body just gave up. I was trying to press myself into the fabric, trying to find some stability. It’s not a shot. It’s a psychological attack. I feel like my soul left my body for a second. Just floated up to the ceiling to get away from the screen.
It reminds me of this one time when I was like, ten? My dad took me to this state park and there was this fire lookout tower. Like, an old rickety wooden one. And he dared me to climb to the top. And I got about halfway up and the whole thing started swaying. Just a little bit, but to me it was like being in an earthquake. I just froze. Couldn't go up, couldn't go down. My dad had to come up and get me. I remember the wood feeling so splintery and loose under my hands and I just… never mind. It's dumb.
But god, the tension in this movie. They just lean into it. Every creak of that metal, every gust of wind. I was holding my breath for so long I think I almost passed out. And the part with the phone. I was fully invested. Cheering for her. "Yes! Get the signal! Yes!" But now that I'm typing this… really? The phone survives a 2,000-foot fall, bounces off a metal beam, and is perfectly fine except for a cracked screen? I thought I loved that part, but now… was it actually kind of dumb? I don't know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it because my nerves are shot. It felt real in the moment, and I guess that's all that matters, right?
And the vultures. Oh my god, the vultures. I had to cover my eyes. I literally put a pillow over my face and just listened. I could hear the pecking sounds in my surround sound and it was… too much. My cat, Mochi, who was sleeping peacefully on the other end of the couch, shot up and stared at the TV like, "what fresh hell is this?" Sorry, buddy. It was a lot.
Honestly, the whole thing feels like a nightmare you'd have after eating a bad burrito. It's so simple. Two girls. A tower. That's it. But it works. It works so well. I kept pausing it, not just because I was freaking out, but just to… breathe. To look around my living room and remind myself that I was on the ground. That the floor was solid. That I wasn't covered in rust and bird poop. The streaming quality was so good, too, which was almost a curse. Every flake of rust, every crack in the paint was crystal clear on my TV. Felt too real.
So yeah. My heart is still pounding. I feel like I need to go stand outside and hug a tree or something. Something that's rooted to the earth. I don't think I'll be looking out any high-rise windows for a while. Or climbing ladders. Or even standing on a chair to change a lightbulb. Nope.
8/10. I think. I need to go touch some grass.
